The Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, yesterday said misconceptions about the work of the legislature are hampering the smooth operation of the National Assembly.
Speaking at the capacity-building workshop for legislative aides in the National Assembly in Abuja, the DG said the institute is committed to improving on the quality of democracy and that the training of legislative aides was key to the commitment.
He, however, stated that there was so much misinformation about the parliament, “people believed that all the monies budgeted for the National Assembly go to the lawmakers. They do not know that it is only a percentage that goes to them.”
Responding to the issue of the welfare and emolument of aides, the DG promised to take up the matter with the management and leadership of the National Assembly.
