Flight diversion: Kaduna Government begins clearing of possible criminal hideouts

AS planned diversion of both international and local flights from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja to Kaduna International Airport gathers momentum, Kaduna State government has started clearing bushes that may be used by criminal elements along the Kaduna airport Road.

This was coming as massive construction and rehabilitation projects are simultaneously ongoing as part of preparation for the six weeks flight diversion to allow for repair of runway at Abuja airport by the federal government.

Leading newsmen on tour of the airport road, Afaka, Igabi local government area of the state Wednesday, Commissioner, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Shehu Balarabe Giwa, said the possibility of criminal elements hiding in the bushes along the road that links the airport to dual carriage Nnamdi Azikiwe byepass had now been addressed significantly.

According to the commissioner, the effort was part of the state government’s contribution to the federal government’s efforts to safeguard lives and property of foreigners and citizens of the country who would be using the airport for the six weeks diversion plan starting next month.

He said, “As you are aware, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja is going to be closed at the end of March and of course all the activities of the airport will be shifted to Kaduna international airport.

“So, all these ongoing projects are part of contributions of the state government to create a secured and enable environment for foreigners and citizens of Nigeria. So the clearing and cleaning of the road is part of our environment.

“I’m not here on behalf of the committee chaired by the Kaduna State Chief of Staff, Bashir Saidu, but I’m here as Commissioner in charge of environment to see the nature of work been handled by Kaduna State Environmental Authority (KEPA).

“As you can see, no hiding place for criminals because everywhere is open and that make it safer and taken care of security issue on this road. It is the responsibility of the government to provide security.

“I’m hereby calling on the good people of Kaduna State especially the airport community to cooperate with government to make our state safer because all of us will benefit from that. Any suspicion movement should be reported appropriately,” he explained.
